This Teacher's Manual has been prepared as a supplement to the book titled Grand Fun Express. The aim of Grand Fun Express is to strengthen basic values and inspire ethical conduct among learners in Class 5 (broadly covering the age group 9-11 years). In a nutshell, the book tells the story of two children travelling by themselves for the first time. For the pair, the train journey from Delhi to Chennai also becomes a voyage of the imagination, given strength and meaning by their experiences during the trip, the diverse tales they hear from their fellow-travellers, and of course a little adventure that they have! The Teacher's Manual roughly tracks the story of the two children in Grand Fun Express, and has ideas for activities and other interactive exercises which (where possible) build upon the events and experiences as they occur in the book—thereby enriching the overall learning experience. The exercises in this Manual focus on helping children acquire a strong set of ethical values and principles, which will determine their behaviour and attitudes towards themselves, others and the environment. The ultimate aim is to encourage and guide children into becoming confident individuals, independent enquirers, creative thinkers, reflective learners, team workers, and effective participators. These qualities and attributes constitute the foundations of character. They also lie at the heart of the co-scholastic domain, and could be assessed by the teacher for feeding into the overall Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) process.
